However, there are some blinds that, similar to shutters, offer an impressive degree of light and privacy control. These blinds are Venetian, vision, and vertical blinds. Like plantation shutters, these blinds have slats (or stripes) that can be adjusted to your exact preference. You can also fully open, and fully close these blinds too. You’ll have full control over the light entering your home.

First, you should use a metal tape measure to work out the dimensions of your window. Metal tape measures are more reliable and provide greater accuracy. If you don’t have one, use a good quality tape measure.
You have the choice of measuring in either inches or centimetres. If using the former, please measure to the nearest sixteenth of an inch; the latter requires measurement to the nearest millimetre.

Next, you need to decide how you would like your blinds to sit, inside or outside the window. For an inside the window fit, it is called a Recess Size. The outside of your window fit is called Exact Size.

Write It Down

Once you’ve decided between the two fits, it’s best to measure the width by going from left to right. Then write down the measurement, so you don’t forget!
Then measure the length from top to bottom. Remember to write it down. Always write down the width measurement first, followed by the length or drop measurement. It’s best practice because this is how measurements are recorded in the industry, and writing it down this way will avoid confusion and possible mistakes at the manufacturing stage.

Remember to consider any protruding window handles to ensure your new vertical blinds can hang freely.
When you measure for vertical blinds, it’s recommended to measure your window in several places to factor in any size variation. You must note down the smallest measurement.
